Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt repeatedly said he is “not that type of person” in a live interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters to apologize for assaulting a woman in February, the video of which led to his release Friday.
Salters said Hunt requested the interview to offer his apologies, but when the interviewer pressed him for details, he did his best not to get into the weeds.
“It was just a long night, and to be exact, it don’t really matter what happened. I was in the wrong,” Hunt said. “I could’ve took responsibility and made the right decision to find a way to de-escalate the whole situation.”
He later said the incident took place in a residence in Cleveland he had recently moved into, and claimed he did not have a relationship with the woman he assaulted, only having met her once. He has not reached out to the victim herself to apologize directly, he said.
In their statement about releasing Hunt, the Chiefs said Hunt was “not truthful” to them prior to the video of the assault coming out. Hunt told Salters the didn’t tell the Chiefs about the video earlier this year.
But moments later, Hunt said he only knew of the video’s existence for the first time Friday when TMZ published it.
“I realized what I did once I saw the video, and it was really tough to watch and I know I’m not that type of person,” Hunt said.
Hunt said he believes he deserves forgiveness, and that he is receiving counseling for anger management and will continue to do so.
The running back also said the NFL never tried to question him about the assault.
