BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. John Bel Edwards says he disagrees with the Louisiana ethics board’s decision against allowing campaign funds to pay for a candidate’s child care.
The Democratic governor said Wednesday he hopes the Board of Ethics will reconsider its opinion. He says child care is a “reasonable expense” associated with running for office.
In November, the ethics board told a Baton Rouge woman running for a state House seat on the 2019 ballot that she cannot use campaign dollars for care of her children when she attends campaign events. Candidate Morgan Lamandre is asking the board to reconsider that decision, which is contrary to a board opinion issued nearly two decades ago.
Edwards’ comments came in response to a question about the board ruling during the governor’s monthly radio call-in show.
