AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas coach Tom Herman’s latest recruiting class has a heavy dose of out-of-state talent headlined by wide receiver Jake Smith from Arizona.

Smith is the Gatorade national player of the year after amassing 2,349 all-purpose yards and 39 total touchdowns as a senior at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale. He is one of 11 players in the 21-player class that come from outside of Texas.

Texas played in the Big 12 championship game for the first time since 2009 this season and signed a class that stretches well beyond the Big 12 footprint. It includes players from Florida, Georgia and California. Herman has said Texas will always rely on in-state talent but will always be willing to recruit nationally to find the players it needs.

Texas (9-4) plays Georgia (12-2) in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
