SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - New York state officials say the former president of a state-run medical center has been sentenced for illegally padding his pay by a quarter-million dollars.
Attorney General Barbara Underwood says David Smith was sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to pay more than $250,000 in restitution and fines. Smith pleaded guilty in a Syracuse court in September to official misconduct.
The attorney general says Smith used several methods to illegally boost his pay while serving as president of Upstate Medical University in Syracuse from September 2006 to November 2013, when he resigned.
A state investigation found that he ordered a subordinate to improperly give him a nearly $30,000-a-year raise through the State University of New York research foundation.
Smith also received housing reimbursements beyond his $5,000-per-month allowance.
