BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Officials in Alabama have released the names of two people killed when an Amtrak passenger train hit a car last weekend.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office told news outlets said the victim’s in the Saturday night crash were 45-year-old Lloyd Ree Orr Jr., of Bessemer, 35-year-old Kristi Venise Cook of Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Harold Watson said both victims were thrown from the vehicle upon impact and died at the scene.

No one on the train was hurt.

Police said the railroad crossing arms were down when the crash happened. Three other vehicles had driven around the crossing arms just before Orr and Cook were struck.

The Amtrak Crescent train linking New York and New Orleans passes through Birmingham daily.
