MACON, Ga. (AP) - A prosecutor says the fatal shooting of a woman by law enforcement officers in Georgia has been determined to be self-defense.
The Telegraph reports Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke made the announcement Monday, six days after 25-year-old Kaley Dee Gay was shot by officers in Lizella. He says evidence is overwhelming that the officers feared for their lives.
The officers, a Jones County deputy, a Bibb County deputy, a state Community Supervision officer and a deputy U.S. marshal, were part of a Marshals task force. They encountered Gay at a home while serving a warrant on a man, who later surrendered.
Cooke says Gay fired one shot at the officers and was trying to shoot again when her gun apparently jammed.
The state Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
