Mattel said it will meet with a same-sex couple from Arizona in the coming weeks to discuss creating Barbie’s first-ever gay wedding set.

Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio of Scottsdale, who are engaged to be married in May, told “Good Morning America” that they got the idea for a gay wedding set when they were looking for a birthday gift for their 8-year-old niece.

“I came across the Mattel/Barbie ’Wedding Set.’ It was almost perfect — two flower girls, a cake and all, but only a bride and groom were available,” Mr. Jacobi said. So, “we created our own Gay Wedding Set.”

“We bought another Ken, who was in a tux, and took out Barbie and added another Ken in, tied it together and gave Natalie the gift and her reaction was priceless,” he told a local ABC News affiliate.

Mr. Jacobi posted a photo of the gift to his Instagram in an open letter to Mattel earlier this month. Mattel later reached out to the couple to set up a meeting in Los Angeles, the company confirmed to “GMA.”

“Mattel has been wonderful and we are meeting with the head of Barbie design, their design team and marketing — either next Friday or the first week of January,” Mr. Jacobi said. “Just sorting out travel details and schedules. We are so grateful.”
