AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are considering ways to cut emissions from cars and trucks.
The Portland Press Herald reports the Maine Department of Environmental Protection found that emissions from cars, trucks and other vehicles produced 52 percent of emissions in the state in 2015. However, greenhouse gas pollution from power plants and businesses have fallen sharply in recent years,
Experts say the rural state’s small mass transit system has forced Mainers to rely on cars.
Acadia Center policy advocate Kathleen Meil says the state needs to create initiatives for transportation emissions like it’s done with other sectors.
A report by the Acadia Center recommends Maine reduce gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030. The Rockport-based nonprofit says electric buses and cars will help cut greenhouse gases.
