APPLE CREEK, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a deputy in Ohio fatally shot a man who was threatening to harm himself with a gun.
A Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post says deputies were assisting Apple Creek police Sunday morning when the shooting occurred.
The post says the 60-year-old man was found with a handgun behind a business in Apple Creek, and told officers they were going to have to shoot him.
Authorities tried to calm him down for a half hour, but he continued to hold the gun to his head as he “roamed about the downtown area.”
Authorities say the man approached a deputy, who told him multiple times to drop the gun. He refused and the deputy fired one shot from his rifle.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. The deputy is on leave pending investigation.
