HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police in Hartford and New Haven are again joining authorities across the country in offering gift cards for guns.
The gun “buybacks” on Saturday are aimed at making communities safer by taking dangerous weapons off the streets. Guns can be turned in anonymously, no questions asked. Both events run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hartford’s event will be at the Community Renewal Team headquarters and offer Stop & Shop gift cards ranging from $200 for assault rifles to $100 for handguns to $25 for shotguns and rifles. Hartford collected nearly 70 firearms in December of last year.
New Haven police will be accepting guns at the city police academy and also offering gift cards worth up to $200. City police took in nearly 140 guns last year in December.
