DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - Substitute teachers in Decatur City Schools have received a 10 percent to 13 percent pay raise, and school officials hope the increase will help attract substitute employees.
Superintendent Michael Douglas says there’s a shortage of substitute teachers statewide, and Decatur is suffering the same problem. Currently, he says the district is able to get substitutes about 70 percent of the time they are needed. Douglas says that number needs to be at about 90 percent.
The Gadsden Times reports hourly pay for certified substitute teachers goes from $10 per hour to $11.40, while pay for non-certified substitutes increases from $9 per hour to $10.40. Pay for substitute clerical and instructional aides, child nutrition workers and custodians increases to $9 per hour.
The raises were effective Dec. 1.
