“Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski apologized Friday for using a homophobic term to insult Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier this week.

During the on-air apology, which did not mention the secretary of state, Ms. Brzezinski called the phrase “vulgar,” “crass,” and “offensive.”

“I knew it right away and I tweeted that it was a terrible choice of words and that I was sorry,” she said. “I apologize to everyone, especially to the LGBTQ community, and to my colleagues for using it.”

On Wednesday, as the “Morning Joe” panel criticized the Trump administration’s response to Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, Ms. Brzezinski zeroed in on Mr. Pompeo’s comments from an interview that same morning.

“Are the pathetic deflections we just heard when he appeared on ’Fox and Friends’ — is that a patriot speaking?” she said. “Or a wannabe dictator’s butt boy?”
