RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say two former government workers in North Carolina are accused in a scheme to collect overtime pay.
The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday former deputy Dedrick Graham and former human resources director Latonya Benjamin are each charged with multiple counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. They’re both being held at the county jail and it’s not known if they have attorneys.
News outlets report District Attorney Kristy Newton and Sheriff Hubert Peterkin had asked for help from the State Bureau of Investigation after being told at least one county employee and as many as five sheriff’s office employees had engaged in fraud resulting in overpayment of county funds.
The SBI eventually cleared 29 detention officers and four of five deputies of wrongdoing.
