President Trump on Thursday slammed the special counsel investigation for mistreating former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

“They gave General Flynn a great deal because they were embarrassed by the way he was treated - the FBI said he didn’t lie and they overrode the FBI,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “They want to scare everybody into making up stories that are not true by catching them in the smallest of misstatements. Sad!”

He followed up with another tweet directed at special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe: “WITCH HUNT!”

Mr. Mueller last week requested no jail time for Flynn because of his extensive cooperation with the investigation.

The sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday. But the judge this week requested more investigation records from the FBI and Flynn, which could signal a delay in the sentencing decision.

Flynn, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general, resigned as national security adviser less than a month into the Trump administration. He resigned after it was revealed that he lied to Vice President Mike Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador during the transition, which was not illegal.

Flynn has portrayed himself as a victim of FBI entrapment.
