LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A member of a panel that will oversee construction of an oil pipeline tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac has resigned - one day after Gov. Rick Snyder announced his appointment.

Geno Alessandrini was among three members of the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority, which was established under legislation approved this week. Snyder signed the bill and announced the appointments Wednesday.

On Thursday, Snyder spokesman Ari Adler said Alessandrini had stepped aside for personal reasons. Adler said the Republican governor had not requested the resignation.

A message seeking comment was left with Alessandrini’s office. He is a Democrat and business manager of the Michigan Laborers District Council.

Snyder appointed J.R. Richardson of Ontonagon to replace him. Richardson is a Republican and is vice chairman of the state Natural Resources Commission.
