SEATTLE (AP) - A winter storm dropped more than a foot of snow in areas of the Cascades, ushering in a late start to ski and snowboard season at several Washington resorts.
The Mt. Baker Ski Resort east of Bellingham and Stevens Pass northeast of Seattle opened for the season on Wednesday.
The Summit at Snoqualmie along Interstate 90 was scheduled to open Friday.
Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort in Wenatchee also will open Friday.
Ski resorts postponed openings this year because of a lack of snow caused by unusually warm temperatures and lower-than-average precipitation.
Southeast of Tacoma, Crystal Mountain has been open for skiing and snowboarding with limited operations since Nov. 23. The ski area was opening more terrain this week.
The National Weather Service in Seattle says another storm system starting Wednesday night will bring more snow to the Cascades down to 3,000 feet (914 meters).
