PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence’s teachers are one step closer to a new three-year contract.

The School Department Oversight Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to send a contract agreement to the full Providence City Council. WPRI-TV reports the committee also held a public hearing on the contract agreement Tuesday, but the only person to testify was Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro.

Calabro called the contract good for teachers and fair for the city. The union has already voted in support of the three-year contract, which guarantees members raises of 2 percent retroactive to Sept. 1, 2 percent on the first day of the 2019-20 school year and 1.25 percent on Jan. 1, 2020.

The city’s teachers have been working under an expired contract agreement since Aug. 31, 2017.
