MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - People living at a homeless encampment in Minneapolis have begun moving into a temporary shelter across the highway.
Minnesota Public Radio reports that people began moving on Tuesday when the shelter opened. Construction crews hope to have it fully finished by the end of the week.
As many as 300 people have lived at the homeless camp in south Minneapolis. But there have been growing safety concerns including fires.
The city decided not to shut down the camp until the temporary shelter was ready. It will house up to 120 people.
The city hasn’t yet set a time when the encampment will close.
