SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say one person has been confirmed dead inside a car that is upside down in the Spokane River.

The Spokesman-Review reports dive teams still were working Wednesday afternoon to recover the car and remains.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Gregory says the car entered the river by the Centennial Trail in Spokane Valley some time before 8:30 a.m.

The identity of the person inside has not been released.

Gregory said at about noon that the topography of the area, with steep terrain and private property flanking the river, was making recovery difficult.
