CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Regulators have approved a request to build a new transmission line on New Hampshire’s Seacoast.
The Site Evaluation Committee voted Monday in favor of the Seacoast Reliability Project, following two weeks of deliberations. The project, to be built by Eversource, would span13 miles between Madbury and Portsmouth. One mile would be buried beneath Little Bay.
Eversource hopes to start construction in the spring of 2019, barring potential appeals. It says the power line is a necessary upgrade to overworked infrastructure in a fast-growing region.
Eversource says the transmission cables will not harm the bay and the process for burying them below sea level is safe.
The utility completed construction of a 24.5-mile transmission line between Londonderry, New Hew Hampshire, and Tewksbury, Massachusetts, last year.
