BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An 83-year-old Vietnam veteran isn’t sitting quietly in retirement. He’s earned a doctorate degree from Louisiana State University.

Johnnie Jones will receive his Ph.D. in human ecology at an LSU graduation ceremony Friday.

And the Marine Corps veteran isn’t quitting now that he’s reached the doctorate level. Next up, he says he hopes to go to law school, saying the schoolwork helps to make him the best he can be.

Jones started taking LSU correspondence courses while he was deployed in Vietnam.

He earned a sociology degree from the University of Hawaii after returning to the United States. Later, he earned a master’s degree in social work from LSU and then went to work for the corrections department, retiring 25 years later as a prison warden.
