CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Delegate Amy Summers has been appointed the first Republican woman to serve as majority leader in the West Virginia House of Delegates.
GOP House Speaker Roger Hanshaw announced the Taylor County delegate’s appointment Monday in a news release.
Summers was first elected to the House in 2014. She most recently was vice chairwoman of the House Health Committee. She is a registered nurse and cattle farm owner.
Hanshaw says he’s worked with Summers on the House Judiciary Committee and he has “seen firsthand the reasoning and tenacity that will help her excel as Majority Leader.”
Summers replaces Morgan County Republican Daryl Cowles as majority leader.
Hanshaw also appointed Fayette County Republican Kayla Kessinger as assistant majority leader and Jefferson County Republican Paul Espinosa as majority whip.
