A watchdog group on Monday sued the FBI, demanding it reveal whether bureau employees leaked information to Rudolph W. Giuliani, a close political ally and now-lawyer for President Trump.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) said Mr. Giuliani appeared to have inside information in late 2016 when he went on television and teased a looming surprise, two days before former FBI Director James Comey reopened the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email account just prior to Election Day.

The organization had tried to pry the information from the FBI with a Freedom of Information Act request in April, attempting to identify the source of the leak, but that request went unanswered, opening the door to the new lawsuit.

The subject of leaks to Mr. Giuliani also came up during Mr. Comey’s closed-door session with lawmakers last week, where GOP chairmen called the former director in for a nearly seven-hour session to quiz him on his handling of the Clinton and Russia investigations.

He revealed the FBI had opened an investigation into its own field office in New York about who was the source of information getting into the hands of the former New York City mayor.

“I never got a report out on that before I was fired,” Mr. Comey told lawmakers.
