JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi man has been sentenced in the August 2017 shooting death of a woman at a traffic light near downtown Jackson.
The Clarion Ledger reports 22-year-old Nicholas Jason Coats pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder. Court records show he was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 10 suspended.
Chelsie Lynn Kirschten was shot in the driver’s seat of her Pontiac. Jackson police said one shot was fired into the driver’s side window, hitting her in the upper back. The 23-year-old Kirschten managed to drive the car from the intersection of State and Fortification streets to near Interstate 55, about a half mile (1 kilometer). That’s where she was found dead. A front-seat passenger was unharmed.
Two more men are jailed in Hinds County awaiting trial in the case.
