ASHBURN — Jordan Reed suffered a toe strain in Sunday’s 40-16 loss to the New York Giants and there’s a chance the Redskins tight end could miss the rest of the season.
Coach Jay Gruden said Monday there’s a “level of concern” with the injury, adding the team did not have a precise timetable for recovery.
“It’s a pretty good strain on [his] toe, big toe,” Gruden said. “Obviously with the amount of cutting he does, we’ll see if it’s one week, two weeks or the rest of the year. We’re not sure yet.”
Reed dealt with a fractured toe last season, which, in part, limited him to six games. After he was placed on injured reserve, he had multiple toe surgeries, one in December and another in February, to remove bones in each big toe.
The operations limited Reed throughout OTAs and training camp, but the 28-year-old has remained mostly healthy this season. He has yet to miss a game in 2018.
But Reed hasn’t had a great statistical season. Through 13 games, Reed has just 54 receptions for 558 yards and two touchdowns. He never emerged as the go-to option for Alex Smith before the quarterback’s season-ending leg injury.
Gruden said Reed’s new toe injury isn’t related to the tight end’s fracture from 2017.
Gruden also said linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton suffered a shoulder sprain contusion and wide receiver Josh Doctson is in concussion protocol.
