President Trump accused Democrats on Monday of shifting goal posts away from collusion allegations after new court documents tied him to campaign finance violations, which he continued to blame on his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen.
Democrats are floating a possible case for impeachment in light of the latest revelations from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, though none of it involved collusion with Russians.
“So now the Dems go to a simple private transaction, wrongly call it a campaign contribution, which it was not,” Mr. Trump wrote.
Court filings filed late last week included how Cohen told investigators that the infamous hush-money payments were directed and coordinated with Mr. Trump.
In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to several federal crimes, including campaign finance violations for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he sent to Playboy model Karen McDougal and porn star actress Stormy Daniels. At the time, Cohen said it was at the direction of a candidate for federal office, meaning the president.
In his tweet, Mr. Trump downplayed what Cohen admitted in court, arguing it wasn’t his fault if his lawyer misstepped.
“Lawyer’s liability if he made a mistake, not me,” he posted. “Cohen just trying to get his sentence reduced. WITCH HUNT!”
