MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Two city councilors in the city of Barre are hoping to find a solution to a long-running problem of what can be done about vacant, abandoned and blighted buildings in the community.
Officials say an ordinance to address the issue that has been on the books for nine years hasn’t worked.
City Manager Steve Mackenzie says requiring owner to register their vacant properties with the city hasn’t worked in most cases and an assortment of fines, fees and other regulations haven’t been the desired deterrent.
The Barre Times Argus reports City Councilor Higby said she and Councilor Rich Morey are proposing the creation of a working group 2020 Vision for Barre, which would take a hard look at the issue and explore possible solutions.
