Ryan Zimmerman will officially be “Zim,” Daniel Murphy will be “Murph” and Bryce Harper will be “Mondo” when the Washington Nationals play a series at the New York Mets Aug. 24-26.
That weekend is “Players Weekend” around Major League Baseball, and for the second straight year, players will put nicknames on the backs of their jerseys instead of their surnames.
No one on the Nationals chose to keep their surname on the jersey, thankfully.
Harper’s “Mondo” was the star’s childhood nickname given to him by his uncle, a word seemingly made up out of thin air.
Some other clever nicknames will be Max Scherzer’s “Blue Eye,” a reference to his heterochromia iridum that gave him one brown eye and one blue eye, and Kelvin Herrera’s “K 40,” a combination of his jersey number and first initial (which, as we know, doubles as the symbol for a strikeout).
