Liberals celebrated a number of primary victories Tuesday, saying voters will have the opportunity this fall to send more bold leaders to Congress as part of a “progressive wave.”
James Thompson won the Democratic nomination in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District, while Andy Levin emerged victorious in Michigan’s 9th Congressional District.
Also in Michigan, Rashida Tlaib won the primary in the 13th Congressional District, putting her a step closer to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.
“Rashida Tlaib beat out a crowded field for John Conyers’ seat tonight by running as an unabashed bold progressive with a message of Medicare for all, a $15 minimum wage, and debt-free college,” said Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
“This primary and others across the country have shown that a bold progressive, economic-populist message is the way to win tough races in red, purple, and blue districts,” she said.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory over Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s June primary injected new energy in the left wing of the party, which sees the 2018 election as a chance to send more troops to Washington and force the Democratic Party to move to the left.
