VAN BUREN, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police say a 68-year-old Crawford County man is dead following an early-morning officer-involved shooting in which a police officer was wounded.
Authorities say officers in Van Buren responded to reports of a disturbance at a residence shortly after 12:40 a.m. Sunday and encountered Johnny Fisher.
Officials say the officers asked Fisher to step out of the residence but that he refused. He then allegedly brandished a gun and fired at the officers, striking one of them. Both officers then returned fire, mortally wounding Fisher.
The injured officer was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. He has not been identified.
State police detectives say the findings of their investigation will be forwarded to prosecutors to determine whether the shooting was justified.
