RICHMOND — Redskins defensive tackle Daron Payne is out of his walking boot one week after the rookie had his ankle stepped on in practice, coach Jay Gruden said Saturday.

Last week, Gruden said Payne would be out 2-3 weeks and in a walking boot for a week. The 20-year-old has not practiced since suffering the injury on July 27.

The Redskins drafted Payne with the 13th overall pick in April to shore up their defensive line and 32nd-ranked rush defense.

In Payne’s absence, the Redskins have given fifth-round rookie Tim Settle a bigger role. Washington also likes to rotate their defensive linemen in order to keep them fresh.
