The Washington Nationals had a moment of silence before Friday’s game for Arizona Sen. John McCain, who died Aug. 25 at the age of 81.
It was the first home game for the Nationals since he passed away.
The public address announcement informed fans that he was an avid baseball fan and was a regular at Nationals Park.
That was certainly the case when the Arizona Diamondbacks made their one visit to Washington each season.
His connections to sports went beyond baseball. Cardinals football star Larry Fitzgerald was asked to speak at services this week for McCain. “He cared about the substance of my heart,” the NFL star said of McCain.
McCain entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954 and served until 1981.
Washington began a three-game series Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made their only trip to Washington in late April.
The D-backs are currently in first place in the National League West while the Nationals are third in the NL East.
