After advancing to the quarterfinal round, former world No. 1 Andy Murray withdrew from the Citi Open in Washington Friday night.

“I’m exhausted after playing so much over the last 4 days, having not competed on the hard courts for 18 months,” Murray wrote in a statement. “I also need to be careful and to listen to my body as I come back from a long-term injury. I’m gutted not to be playing, and I’d like to thank the tournament and all the fans.”

Murray was playing in just his third event since having hip surgery last year. Before the Citi Open began, Murray told reporters, “I’ll have to see how the body responds to that. Not just my hip, but the rest of my body as well.”

His would-be quarterfinal opponent, Alex de Minaur, advanced by walkover.
