PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The National Weather Service says the temperature in Providence has hit a record-tying 95 degrees, while some schools in the state closed early or cancelled afternoon activities because of the heat.
The temperature in the capital city Wednesday tied the record set on the same date in 1953. The high humidity made it feel over 100 degrees in some spots.
Only a handful of school districts in Rhode Island began their academic years this week. Schools in West Warwick and North Providence closed early Wednesday because of the heat, while others cancelled after-school activities.
A heat advisory and air quality alert by the Weather Service were set to expire Wednesday night.
The Weather Service says a cold front moving in Thursday will bring lower temperatures and a chance of thunderstorms.
