MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Filming has begun in parts of Alabama’s capital city for a movie based on a bestselling memoir.

Scenes for “Just Mercy” were being shot on a downtown Montgomery street and in the city’s Garden District on Monday. The Montgomery Advertiser reports that the “Just Mercy” cast includes Michael B. Jordan, who visited a nearby school.

The movie is based on attorney Bryan Stevenson’s book “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.” The movie will follow Stevenson’s defense of Walter McMillian, who sat on death row for six years, convicted on the false testimony.

Jordan’s presence provided some excitement for 15 students at Valiant Cross Academy.

They were doing jumping jacks in a Dexter Avenue parking lot when Jordan made an unexpected visit.

“Are you Michael B. Jordan?” one student shouted.

“You’re from ’Black Panther,’” shouted another.

Jordan is starring as Stevenson, the founder of the Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative.

The “Creed” star had his picture made with the students, and offered some advice.

“You gotta listen to your teachers. … Make sure you listen to your parents. Work hard … just pay attention because school goes by real quick,” Jordan said.

“Just Mercy” also stars Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson.
