LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas is in line to federal funding to support the preparation of first-responders and law enforcement as part of a program that aims to improve the ability of communities to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism.
U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto announced the grant funding Friday.
The $5 million comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as part of the Urban Area Security Initiative.
Cortez Masto says Las Vegas welcomes 39 million visitors annually and that creates unique challenges for first responders.
She and other members of the Nevada congressional delegation earlier this year had requested federal officials modify the grant formula and reassess Las Vegas’ risk profile to reflect the city’s status as a high-volume tourist city and potential target for terrorism.
