PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Board of Elections has warned a Republican gubernatorial candidate about a deal he got on rent for his campaign headquarters.
The board warned Cranston Mayor Allan Fung on Wednesday to be more careful. He was not fined for what the board described as a reporting error.
A WPRI-TV investigation found a prominent developer had given Fung free rent on his 2016 campaign headquarters.
The board was acting on complaints filed by the campaign of his primary opponent, Patricia Morgan, as well as by the campaign for Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo and by government watchdog group Common Cause. Common Cause says the rent deal goes beyond reporting errors and candidates need better guidance.
Fung’s campaign says the outcome “vindicates the campaign” and Fung is excited to move forward.
