President Trump said “flipping” should be illegal on Thursday two days after Michael Cohen implicated him in a guilty plea.
Mr. Trump said in an interview with Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt that flipping “almost ought to be illegal.” People “make up stories” about others just to cut down on their on prison sentences, he argued.
The president said Mr. Cohen only worked for him “part-time” but used that connection to get out of charges related to his taxi cab business.
“He makes a better deal when he uses me like everybody does,” Mr. Trump said, “In all fairness to him most people would do it [flip].”
Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty on Tuesday to campaign finance violations, bank fraud and tax evasion.
The charges came in connection to payments he made to cover up affair allegations against the president. Mr. Trump insisted that the hush money payments did not come from the campaign, but were personal payments.
“They didn’t come out of the campaign. They came from me,” Mr. Trump said.
Despite criticizing Mr. Cohen for “flipping,” the president denied the charges should be considered criminal acts.
