Daniel Murphy noted that no other team but the Nationals had interest in him once he became a free agent after the 2015 season with the New York Mets.
After starting in the postseason that year with the Mets, the infielder signed a three-year contract with Washington. On Tuesday he was traded to the Chicago Cubs, the team that won the World Series in 2016 with bench coach Dave Martinez — now the Nationals manager.
“I feel very disappointed in myself that it kind of came to this point,” said Murphy, who hit at least .300 in all three years with the Nationals. “So, yea, I was surprised. But that’s baseball.”
Here’s a look back at some of Murphy’s biggest moments with the Nationals:
• April 4, 2016: Murphy hit a go-ahead solo homer in his first game with Washington on Opening Day at Atlanta.
• July 12, 2016: Had two hits in three at-bats in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in San Diego.
• Aug. 24, 2016: Hit his first career grand slam in a game against the Orioles.
• April 23, 2017: Hit his second career grand slam in a game against the Mets.
• Oct. 13, 2017: Hit his eighth career postseason home run, against Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs, in a Game 5 loss at Nationals Park.
