New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio denies ripping off President Trump’s “promises kept” slogan after he used the identical phrase during a groundbreaking for a new school on Monday.

Mr. de Blasio stood in front a sign that read, “Promises Made, Promises Kept,” celebrating a new, 1000-seat school in East New York, Brooklyn, which is set to open in 2020, the New York Post reported.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly used the same slogan to tout his accomplishments and was photographed with the message as recently as May.

Mr. de Blasio’s spokesman, Eric Phillips, insisted he similarity was purely coincidental.

“This is stupid,” Mr. Phillips told the New York Daily News. “It is not novel rhetoric.”

Mr. Trump, who apparently learned of Mr. de Blasio’s slogan on “Fox & Friends,” slammed the mayor for lack of creativity.

Mr. de Blasio, a liberal Democrat, is an outspoken critic of Mr. Trump who once compared the president to a “third-world dictator” who uses racist rhetoric as a “strategic tool” to win over conservatives.

Mr. de Blasio responded to Mr. Trump’s tweet in kind Tuesday morning, writing, “The difference is that I’m not lying when I say it.”

Eight more tweets from the mayor attempted to discredit Mr. Trump, including his promises to “drain the swamp” and be a president for “all Americans.”
