WARSAW, Poland (AP) - A spokesman for Poland’s Supreme Court says the judicial body is asking the European Union’s top court to weigh in on regulations that lowered the retirement age for justices.
Judge Michal Laskowski said Thursday the Supreme Court of Poland was suspending the regulations until it hears back from the European Court of Justice. The process could take months.
Poland’s conservative government lowered the retirement age for Supreme Court judges from 70 to 65 as part of a broader judicial overhaul.
European Union leaders and law experts have said the overhaul threatens Poland’s rule of law and are pursuing sanctioning procedures.
Laskowski says the high court’s judges want to hear from the Court of Justice whether the earlier retirement requirement is consistent with EU regulations and laws.
