CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu says it was “unacceptable” for a state agency spokesman to suggest increasing the state’s racial diversity could turn it into a cesspool.
Education Department spokesman Tony Schinella commented on Facebook following a New York Times story on efforts by business, government and nonprofit leaders to diversify mostly-white New Hampshire.
WMUR-TV reports Schinella said northern New England is the way it is because “we’re the only people who want to be here” and “we don’t want or need New Hampshire to become any kind of cesspool.” He didn’t return a phone message Thursday. Commissioner Frank Edelbut condemned the statement and said the department is taking “all appropriate and available disciplinary actions.”
Sununu, who created an advisory group on diversity, said such statements “are unacceptable and wrong.”
