Amtrak train derails near Union Station in Washington, D.C.

An Amtrak train with about 196 passengers on board has derailed north of Union Station, authorities said Thursday afternoon.

Amtrak said Train 20’s lead engine derailed coming into the District’s Union Station at a low speed.

“The engine is being removed from the consist, and the passengers will continue on the train into Union Station,” Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said.

“The engine was removed,” he said. “The passengers remained on the train and are currently on the move into the station.”

D.C. Fire and EMS said one railcar of the 11-car train derailed just after noon Thursday. Emergency medical technicians were helping passengers off the train and walking them to Union Station. There were no reported injuries.

The entire train, including the derailed car, were upright when D.C. Fire arrival on scene. D.C. Fire was dispatched at 12:13 p.m.

Amtrak is continuing to investigate the incident.

All inbound and outbound train service on the north side of Union Station is shut down for D.C. Fire and EMS’ safety.

Mr. Abrams said Amtrak customers can expect train delays south of Union Station.

Other train delays are possible. Virginia Railway Express tweeted this: “Due to an incident at Union Station earlier today Fredericksburg Line Train 301 and Manassas Line Train 325 will hold at the Coach Yard until further notice. More information to follow.”
