Five months to the day that Orlando Scandrick signed a free agent deal with the Washington Redskins, the cornerback has joined the Kansas City Chiefs.

Scandrick signed with Washington in March to fill a need at nickel cornerback after the Redskins traded Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith acquisition. But in a surprise move, the team released him Tuesday, just before the close of training camp in Richmond.

Coach Jay Gruden said the timing of the move was to allow Scandrick to find a new team before the regular season. Five days later, he’s found one.

The decision to release him “had nothing to do with his play,” Gruden said, but rather the emergence of other cornerbacks down the depth chart. From Fabian Moreau, the presumed new nickel corner, to undrafted free agent Danny Johnson, the Redskins plan to rely on these younger guys.

Scandrick spent the first 10 years of his career playing for the Dallas Cowboys. He has eight career interceptions and 11.5 sacks.
