SHIRLEY, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old man has been struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train in Suffolk County.

LIRR spokesman Chris McKniff tells Newsday that the man was struck around 7 p.m. Thursday near a crossing west of the Shirley-Mastic train station in in Shirley.

McKniff says the Penn Station-to-Speonk commuter train was carrying about 300 passengers at the time. Service between Patchogue and Montauk was suspended until around 9:30 p.m. as police investigated. Buses were used to take riders along the route.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.
