President Trump offered his “warmest best wishes and sympathies” Thursday to the family of the late singer Aretha Franklin, calling her “a special woman.”

“She brought joy to millions of lives and her extraordinary legacy will thrive and inspire many generations to come,” Mr. Trump said at the start of a Cabinet meeting. “She was given a great gift from God — her voice, and she used to well.”

The legendary musical artist died Thursday at age 76 from pancreatic cancer.

Mr. Trump said he knew Ms. Franklin well.

“She worked for me on numerous occasions. She was terrific,” he said. “People loved Aretha. She was a special woman. So just want to pass on my warmest best wishes and sympathies to her family.”
