LANDOVER — Alex Smith will start for the Washington Redskins and play one series in Thursday night’s preseason game against the New York Jets, according to sideline reporter Lisa Salters of “Monday Night Football.”

It will mark Smith’s first game action of any kind for the Redskins since the team acquired him from the Kansas City Chiefs last spring.

Smith did not play in the Redskins’ preseason opener last week against the New England Patriots.

Coach Jay Gruden previously was mum on whether Smith would see any playing time this week. With rookie running back Derrius Guice suffering a season-ending ACL injury against the Patriots last week, concerns were raised about risking more injuries during meaningless exhibition games, but Gruden said he did not want his team to be afraid of getting hurt.

After Smith’s time is up, expect to see another healthy dose of Colt McCoy at quarterback. Kevin Hogan is also active.
