RICHMOND, Va. — As far as Jay Gruden is concerned, don’t expect any more fights between the Redskins and the New York Jets. The Redskins coach said Monday he’ll blow his whistle quickly to prevent any chance of a confrontation.
On Sunday, multiple fights broke out during practice, including one that almost spilled into the crowd.
Gruden said he talked with his own team to go over expectations and met with Jets coach Todd Bowles before practice.
“We’ll have a short, quick, fast whistle if something happens and get everything under control,” Gruden said. “But the most important thing for us, myself and coach Bowles is to get good work done. Like I said, there was a lot of great things on tape that we can learn from. … I mean, we got a lot of good work done. We intend to do that today.”
Gruden said suspending players could be an option if fights continue. The Jacksonville Jaguars suspended defensive end Dante Fowler and cornerback Jalen Ramsey for a week after Fowler got into a fight with a teammate and Ramsey confronted a reporter who was recording it.
“It was unfortunate” that the fights happened, Gruden said. “We got a lot of good work done throughout the course of the day and sometimes that gets overshadowed by an unfortunate incident. It’s behind us now. We’re going to move forward today and get a lot of good work done.”
