PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo is urging schools to use part of a $10.5 million school construction fund to make important repairs to school security.
The Providence Journal reports the Democratic governor said Tuesday that “things changed for me as a mother and a governor” after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida, and she wants prioritize use of the fund.
Raimondo created the fund in 2015. The governor’s office says the fund can be used for low-dollar, high-impact repairs, and work must be completed in 18 months.
Past uses of the fund include securing windows, doors, installing lock-down hardware and security card readers.
Raimondo on Wednesday planned to discuss school safety further at Asa Messer School in Providence.
