Victor Robles figures to be in the Nationals’ outfield in the near future, especially if Bryce Harper leaves Washington via free agency after this season.
But a possible return to Washington this year may have been delayed when Robles was injured while diving for a ball in the outfield for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs on Monday in Rochester, New York against a farm team of the Minnesota Twins.
Video shows Robles, 20, holding his arm as he came off the field under his own power.
“Assessing the situation. No further comment,” Mark Scialabba, the Nationals’ director of player development, sent in a text to The Washington Times on Monday night.
Robles, one of the top prospects in the minors, made his Major League debut last season and hit .250 in 13 games with 24 at bats with the Nationals. He began this season as the top prospect in the Washington system.
He was in spring training with the Nationals this season, but was sent to Syracuse so he could play every day. Robles was hitting .385 in his first 13 at bats for Syracuse and had four hits in a game Saturday.
